GrassMaster Pro standing drymatter instrument
The GrassMaster Pro drymatter instrument is a one-handed electronic probe that can be used like a walking stick in paddocks and test quadrats. Using the capacitance technique, it is probably the world’s most accurate standing drymatter instrument for ryegrass, clover, plantain, juvenile lucerne and chicory species. Users can choose an adjustable fixed linear equation for their farm, or quickly generate a custom equation based on visual assessments and probing of a high cover and low cover area of the forage being measured, for tuning of the probe for the conditions of the day. The correlation of probe average data (against actual cut and measured drymatter) is extremely high over similar conditions. This means it is always very good at grading paddocks and quadrats. The GrassMaster probe is easy to use, with little change in accuracy between operators, and can be used while leaning out the side of a quad bike or 4×4. Up to 800 paddock or quadrat averages can be stored, and these are downloaded by USB cable to a feed wedge output using the supplied GrassTrack program running in Windows. The probe indicator has a bright LCD screen too, so you can check all the data in the field.
If used regularly, the growth rates and annual tonnage of drymatter grown in each paddock for a year can be calculated, so you can see which paddocks need rejuvenating first, and what the range of performance is. Knowing more about your cheapest available drymatter being produced on-farm and improving that, can save a lot of bought-in feed costs.
